Relocating "Baby Boomers" June 3, 2009
BABY BOOMERS! WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO?
I’ve been getting more calls lately from folks of the Baby Boomers era looking at retiring and downsizing or just plain simplifying their lifestyle or changing it up a bit. They are wanting some help in making the right connections so they can get solid information in the areas they are interested in moving. They have a home to sell and will be relocating and purchasing elsewhere OR they are interested in buying a 2nd home in a place they’ve long wanted to spend more time.
I find it fascinating how we spend years "upsizing" and then the time comes where it feels natural to "downsize." Here’s my own case in point.
When I was 29 years old., I strapped a backpack on and a childhood girlfriend and I flew to New Zealand where we hitchhiked around the country from Cape Reinga in the very North to Invercargill in the South. (It took me years more before I would finally get to Stewart Island to visit the penguins!)
Living out of a backpack was so wonderful. I knew where everything was and didn’t have to think about anything much beyond that packpack and the road. It was pre-kids and I had taken time off work for however long this adventure would take. It ended up being a year long as I actually got married to a "nice young fellow" while in New Zealand.
We spent the past many years owning/growing a real estate company in Northern California and working extremely hard while raising our sons who were born in 1985 and 1987. They are now grown and have left home and off on their own adventures. Good for them! Those years were a whirlwind but wonderful. It’s now fun to see them making choices about where THEIR lives will go.
We had the foresight (well, truth be told, my husband had the foresight) to downsize the same year our younger son graduated high school in 2005. While I was not keen at the time because of so many great memories that went along with that phenomenal place we called home for 9 years – I’m so glad we did. There was just too much to care for with the 11 acres we lived on and also a larger home.
With just 2 of us at home anymore, the joy of taking care of that wasn’t quite there like it had been! We thought it would be the right thing to let another family enjoy it!
The decision being made a little bit FOR me, ground was broken on our new place on fewer acres and was built by Ochoa and Shehan, good friends who are wonderful to work with. The GOOD news was I would finally get a pool! In this climate, I’m not sure how we endured without it for so long! There were things to look forward to. And while it was sad to say good-bye to the old, I have to honestly say that I don’t look back with sadness. I have always known it was the right move and life is with fewer hassles for us to enjoy other things in our now 4 y.o. home.
