How in the world do you move your "stuff?" July 23, 2009
Moving has got to be one of the biggest pains. We often don’t realize how quickly we’ve accumulated way too much “stuff” until we’re getting into our closets and attic and what not.
The last time we moved, in 2005, I could not believe the amount of “stuff” we had in that house. And we were moving to a smaller home so that presents its own issues.
The entire real estate and moving industry is changing before our eyes in this economy. Many Realtors have gotten out of the business currently because not so many are needed. Moving companies are making their own changes to accomodate the changing economy with fewer homes being sold and higher fuel prices. It leaves you wondering who you can call to get a reliable mover to shift your precious things from “A” to “B”.
What are the costs and will my things be safe and will the truck get there on time? How do you know who you hire will do what they say? Will they take care in packing my things? What about insurance? Will they stand behind their work? How do you know they will “walk the talk?” If something were to go wrong, then what? We all want to go for a reasonable bid but how do you know that you are getting a professional to handle the move of your household items when you are online and have never met person or heard of the company? What do you really know about them? Their website looks good so they must be good, right?

I have moved more than three dozen time in 50 years and I can tell you that the last time I moved, three years ago, I wish I had known you were there to help.
Being an experienced ‘mover’ I had planned everything very carefully.
Even though I was basically moving a huge leased office space back to my primary residence… and didn’t need to deal with realtors… the process of moving seemed more daunting and time consuming than ever!
Even with careful planning, I spent hours (not minutes)on the phone canceling or transferring utilities and service, replacing leased furniture for one space with leased furniture for another space, securing a storage room for overage since I was moving into a smaller space, etc…
I had secured what I thought was a reputable mover several weeks before the move.
By all accounts they were considered a completely reputable mover in my area.
I secured a signed written quote and felt confident that everything would be ‘handled’ properly.
I chose to do my own packing because I had items going to two locations and took the opportunity to label and ‘color code’ everything very carefully — we had experienced bad results from overs who packed for us before (including stolen and broken items from the world’s largest moving company) and I would never choose to have a moving company pack for me again.
Two days before the ‘move date’ the moving company called me and basically told me the price would be triple what I had received the writtn quote for. I referred to the faxed quote and was told (basically): “If you want your stuff moved you’ll have to pay xx$$ for each stair and each step to the moving van…” — which tripled the cost I was originally quoted. This was obviously a practice of theirs… call 2 days before the moving date and change everything despite a written quote – which they basically said was meaningless… the company obviously banked on the idea that two days from the move date a person would be feeling frantic and would just give in to their tactics. I was so outraged, that I remember using several explatives when I told them that I would move the $#%$#@! stuff myself rather than be strong armed at the last minute.
I was able to make alternate arrangements quickly and everything worked out fine… but the ‘reputable mover’ had turned what was a well planned pleasant move into a nightmare and strssed me out completely in the process.
Relo Mary, a service such as yours probably could have saved me 20 hours of ‘phone time’ and probably could have saved me a ton of stress.
If I eveer have to move again…I’m calling you, first!
Meanwhile, I’ll be checking out your blog for more cool tips on moving (just in case I have to do it again sometime:)
