Redding, CA – Easy Drive to Sausilito December 21, 2009
Location, Location. 3 hours from Redding, CA to Sausilito.
How DO you pick a place to live? We all make a list of priorities but one thing that can’t be overlooked is lifestyle. What are things to do and how far to you have to go to do them? Redding, CA is phenomenal in this regard. This is one post in a series about cool places within 3 (or so) hours of Redding.
Recently we drove from Redding to Sausilito to meet with filmmaker, Will Parinello of the Mill Valley Film Group, who has filmed in the Himilayas. We became familiar with his work when he entered a movie into the Sundial Film Festival in Redding, CA in March, 2009.
Our son, Will Lascelles, is going to be working on a movie the early part of 2010 in the Himilayas. We knew it would be great to get the expertise of someone who has been there and done that. B4Apres will tell you a bit about the upcoming project.
The day started out wandering around beautifully quaint Sausilito
– nestled in the hills across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco. The views are tremendous from this vantage point of SF Bay. We wandered the shops in the morning and enjoyed the Dr. Seuss art exhibit at the Fingerhut Gallery. We popped into a coffee shop on the water where we savored the view, chatted with our Colorado friend, Wendy, and met a 50 year resident of the small community, Ben, with his wonderful dog, Zoe. (see link to pictures further down) It’s a friendly and welcoming town.
We walked by the waterfront and shot some pictures of the marina – looking glorious in the fog on this December day. The water was glassy calm. I loved seeing Dream Chaser in the water, a sailboat we’ve been out on a couple of times with friends, and remembering the fun and thinking we need to do that again soon.
It was time to meet up with Will at Sushi Ran for our meeting over some excellent Japanese cuisine and hot tea. It was the perfect setting to have our conversation
wander off to ideas about this and that regarding filmmaking in the Himilayas. It was fascinating and the conversation just flowed. Thank you, Will Parinello!
All too soon, it was time to say our good byes and head back to the Redding area. Sausilito, and all it has to offer, remains a favorite destination not that far away from home but with such a difference. To drive a little more than 3 hours to be in such a fascinating place as this is pure bliss.
One of the reasons I love where I live in Northern California is because it is central to tremendous gems like Sausilito. See more pictures…

I can’t agree more. Lifestyle is something that really must be factored in. When we moved from Bombay to Shanghai, it was on a whim (or really, the result of a three decade long dream of mine), and did not factor in the element of lifestyle. Yet, those almost 5 years in Shanghai were some of the best in my life. One of the factors that came out on top, was that Shanghai (especially as an expat) offered great lifestyle, sans great environment. From there, I moved to Singapore was great as well.
Returning home was a difficult decision. The Indian economy is growing, but life in Bombay (Mumbai), is crap. The lifestyle that Bombay offers is of an extraordinarily low quality.
If I ever move to the US, I will call you!
