One Life – How Many Moves? May 24, 2010

How many times have you moved since childhood?

On my walk this morning, I reflected on the various places I’ve lived            Oregon home
in my lifetime.  My first move was at 6 months when my dad relocated his dental
practice from one Minnesota town to another.  I lived in that home until I went away to college at 18.  Moving had not really been a part of my life.
If I start adding up the moves from high school graduation onward, there are a lot of addresses in different towns and cities.  There were initially dorm rooms and that transitioned into apartments.  I moved onto rentals in houses or townhomes.   Small towns to the “big smoke”, Minneapolis.  Oh yeah, there was a summer in Bar Harbor, Maine when I had the distinct pleasure of breathing in the sea air on a daily basis.  The accommodation was rather basic but it didn’t matter as long as I could hear the ocean lapping outside the windows.

Then there was the house in Raetihi, New Zealand I called home base for the better part of a year.  And back to one more apartment before buying our first home in Redding, CA after we’d been about 10 months.  I can now tell you what it’s like to live on the west, east and north sides of town are like – will have to work on the south side!

How many times have you moved since childhood?
Some people move a lot and others very little.  How about you?  Your comments are welcome.

That’s a few moves, Iris! We’ve been in our home 5 years and we don’t plan to go anywhere for a long time… Thanks so much for taking time to respond. Greetings to everyone in Keller. :-)

Too many, but the last stop in Neebing ON has sweet smells, cool nights, quiet, lots of sunshine, wildlife and greenery, and whitery in the winter.

When I applied for membership to the bar in New York, I was required to list every place I had ever lived since childhood. We moved for the first time when I was seven, then again when I was 16. After college I moved in with some roommates. When I was in my early 20s, I traveled out of the US for 18 months. Upon return, I had a couple of moves in connection with a relationship, and then a couple of moves during law school. After law school I have lived in 4 different places. Current residence since the mid-1980s, although I moved to a different unit in the same building around 14 years ago. The details are a bit hazyon some of the residences.

I was born in Canada and we moved to Arizona when I was 6 years old. Other than 4 years in the Navy, I’ve basically lived here in Arizona. I’d also like to take this opportunity to applaud Mary for her great website and the good work she does in networking on LinkedIn. We connected there and become friends through emails, discussion/comments, and phone calls. Mary, you are such a wonderful person and I hope to meet you in person some day. Everyone in the area should use your great services. …JGH

You guys are way ahead of me. Here we go…..I lived in 3 different homes in the Willmar area before graduating from high school. I actually went to a one room school house, with only 4 kids in my grade for elementary school, so getting to Willmar Jr. High was a big deal. I then lived in dorms and apartments while going to Macalester College in St. Paul and the U of M in Mpls., and lived briefly in Berea, KY and Stirling, Scotland, while studying there. I got married, had 2 kids, and lived in 6 different homes in the North Oaks, Shoreview, and Arden Hills area of Mpls/St.Paul. I got divorced and moved to Austin, TX in 2006. I first lived in a condo and now live in a house, in a suburb called Lakeway. There are actually several people who have moved from MN here. My daughter lives in Austin, and my son is living with me while finishing college. It is 90 here today, and I love the warm weather, wearing flip flops instead of boots, and being able to throw away my shovel when I moved.

So far, 12 times. I feel like I may have two more moves in me – the last one will be retirement, and I hope at that time to live on a sail boat and travel around the world – how will I count that? Will the sailboat be my home, that “move in to” (to be counted once), with a changing location?

- Southampton, NY – 3 times before the age of 8
- Massapequa, NY – 2 times between 8 and 16
- Back to Southampton
- Manhattan (NYC) – 2 times between ages 18 and 24
- Queens, NY (an outer borough of Manhattan) – 2 times between 24 and 30
- Jersey City, NJ – 2 times in the last 18 years. Last time I moved: 10 years ago, and then, only two blocks away.

Well, four times within Chicago before and after college. Four times during college (moved once for each year). Three times in Los Angeles, once to Union City, CA (Bay Area), once to Phoenix, and two moves here in St. Joseph, MO (first time to rent, second time to buy). Wow! That is more than I thought.
