Sisters Find a Great Home July 16, 2010

I met these sisters in Sisters, Oregon!

This is a dog lover’s story.  Every home needs a dog or two – don’t they?  Well, unless you’re a cat lover then you can replace this story with cats in mind.

I had just checked into the lodge where I’ll be for a few days in Sisters, Oregon to attend a real estate auction my husband is involved with here on Tuesday. As I headed back to my car, two very white dogs sitting in a shiny black pick-up caught my eye.  A man was petting them who I presumed to be their owner.

I walked over to the truck and we easily engaged in conversation about these two friendly, white dogs.  Pretty soon his wife, Gena, joined us and I learned more.

These dogs have quite a story.

Chris and Gena, had brought them home when pups and understood them to be purebred Maltese and born in the same litter – so sisters.   Looking at them now, the only thing they have in common is their very white hair and a little pink around their eyes.  One is 4 times larger than the other.  So sisters?  Really?

It made me reflect back 14 years to when we got a pup we named Annie.  We went through something similar to what Gena and Chris did with Honey and Babe.  When Annie was 3 weeks old, we brought our son over to select a dog from a litter of Shih Tzus.  He fell for one in particular and that is the one we brought home when she was 6 weeks old.  It took all of 30 seconds for her to fit into the family.  It was odd that she shed as Shih Tzus don’t…

A few months later, the breeder came over to our house and asked to see Annie.  She didn’t realize that Annie was the one at her feet looking up wanting to get some attention.  Annie didn’t look like ANY of her siblings – all purebred Shih Tzus.  The breeder was stunned!  We assured her Annie was the same dog we had gotten from her.

It was from that point forward I realized that there can be more than one father responsible for a litter of pups.

Maybe Honey and Baby and Annie are distant cousins!
