HOW TO AVOID THE SPLAT SOUND!
Good Bungy Jump
It took me years to bungy jump. My entire family had done it as Queenstown, New Zealand is my husband’s hometown and bungy jumping was started there by AJ Hackett at the Kawarau Bridge a few miles from town. Their claim to fame is they’ve been “throwing people off things since 1986.” And, I might say, they’ve been doing it successfully if you look at their history. That is the key here. Believe me, I’ve paid attention all these years. Still, it doesn’t matter what they did yesterday – it’s what happens today with me in this particular launch! As I waited on the bridge, it was obvious they were meticulously caring for each jumper’s safe launch.
Now in several countries including Russia, Germany, China and Australia, it’s been phenomenal to see this crazy sport morph! And it’s been extraordinary to see the impact it’s had on Queenstown itself!
It was New Year’s Day last year. I’m really not sure what prompted me but I decided New Year’s Day, 2009, would be the day I would fly off the Kawarau Bridge like I’d seen so many others do since 1986. I booked my jump for the middle of the afternoon. On the way, my then 23 y.o. son said, “Mom, you’re so quiet!” Well, what is there to say prior to throwing yourself off a 43 metre ledge?
It struck me how very professional every single team player was at AJ Hackett from signing in at the desk to being picked up at the bottom. While this was a fun thing to do, they realize all jumpers’ lives are in their hands and they each took it seriously while still injecting fun into the equation. I deemed them professionals. They explained everything and made sure I felt secure with what I was about to do and were seeing to it that I would have a safe flight!
Sitting on that bridge with others lined up to jump before and after me was interesting. They were from many countries speaking several languages. Some were scared. Others couldn’t wait to jump off. I thought I was fine until my lungs took over – here’s my 28 second video for you to have a sense of how excited I was! A real purging of the soul in those few short seconds.
AJ Hackett’s guys were in the raft in the river below to move me from phase 1 to phase 2 by removing the bungy cord and padding around my ankles. It was slick. An exhilarating experience, I made my way from the raft to the 150 steps or whatever it was to join my family at the top. They were the ones in the video yelling “JUMP, JUMP!” We drove to nearby Arrowtown for a toast. What a great way to start 2009 – intact and happy
Bad Bungy Jump
Compare my exhilarating and safe experience to Rishi Baveja’s bungy jump in Thailand. It did not have the same kind of ending. This was not an AJ Hackett jump. Sadly, he ended up critically injured. I cannot recommend enough that you go with tried and true so you don’t have this happen to you when you bungy jump or…
Bad Move
Let’s compare bungy jumping to moving. To use an analogy here, you don’t want to end up with a “the wrong length cord” when you move! It is so tempting to go with the most affordable price but we all know that business costs money like everything else. Where will they cut corners? I knew I wouldn’t appreciate AJ Hackett using a bungy cord that was too old just to save some money. It could mean a very different outcome. Can you afford a bad move?
Often I hear that cheaper commissions quoted end up just as expensive as the full commission – it’s just how they lure you in. Realize, too, that if someone is willing to cut their commission to get your business that they are not good negotiators. Where the rubber meets the road is when that agent is negotiating the sale or purchase of your home. THAT’S where the real money is.Be aware, too, that movers vary tremendously. To go online to get a bid to move your household goods is not only impractical but may not be safe. You won’t know who you are dealing with. We can refer you to a reputable, trustworthy moving company. There are a lot of variables that need to be talked about and it is best if a representative from the company comes to where your household items are so a proper evaluation can be made of what is being moved.
Beware of rogue movers. I got a call from an acquaintance recently saying her friend’s belongings were “somewhere” on the road between NYC and SF. They were in a panic. If only this gal had called me in the beginning I could have saved her the grief! The moving company had gone incognito with everything once loaded. There are bait and switch schemes going on in the moving industry where they have you pay a fee upfront and will then demand more once they have your belongings or you will not get your things back. Reputable moving companies, which we will find for you, do not behave in this way.

Great post Mary!
I like the picture & the link to the video of the jump really shows you how much trust you need to have in the people around you to take that step and give it a go. Question, if I don’t know who is recommended, and can’t figure out what is fact from what is fiction based upon what is written on the various internet review websites, how can I know that the people/companies involved with my move are honest, trustworthy people/companies? (For example, how did you choose the AJHackett company for that jump, and how did you really _know_ they were top notch before you made the decision to jump with them?) If I am moving cross-country, it will be especially nerve racking to figure out who the good guys are versus just randomly picking a name and hoping for the best.
All the best,
Bruce
You’ve hit the nail on the head, Bruce. How DO you know who is trustworthy? Do you just look up a doctor to go to in the phone book or do you get referred by someone you feel knows good from bad?
That’s exactly our job here at Moving Links 4 You – to find those who are selling, buying, and moving EXCELLENCE to work with. We talk and find out your goals and then will find you the people you need to get the job done well.
So often it is about communication. The worst thing is to work with those who don’t value it and leave you in the dark. And communication will often be a key factor in getting things done on time!
Thanks for taking the time to comment. I do appreciate it, Bruce. See you soon, I hope.
Cheers,
Mary

Jumping would never be for me as I’m afraid of heights. It does look exciting. Thanks for sharing. Francke the Lyrical Yankee (FLY)
Well, Francke – never say never! I had said that for a long time and THEN? There I went.
Thanks for taking a look… See you on the FLY!
BUNGY WITH BAD ANKLES?
Someone just googled “can you bungy jump if you have bad ankles?” and my site came up…so I’m responding to them – whether they see this or not…someone else might see it who would be curious.
At the Kawarau jump, I was attached by the ankles. I wouldn’t have done that to my ankles if I had problems with them. That’s just me. One body. One life. I want my ankles to see me out.
There ARE other ways to be harnessed and I’d look for it.
