NorCal Equivalent to Santa Barbara September 7, 2010

I have a friend who is looking for the area they will retire to in Northern California.  She and her husband are interested in purchasing now since interest rates and prices are lower than they may be in three years when they want to move.

Question.  What area in Northern California can you suggest that is below the snowline, moderate temperatures (mid-70′s) in the summer but without persistent fog, where you can buy a 4 bedroom, 2 bath home on an acre or three for around $500K?

I thought it would be fun to toss around some ideas.  It sounds like we need to figure out the NorCal equivalent to Santa Barbara!

Hey Mary, I’m sure you’ve narrowed down a few place for them already but have they considered Mendocino, Mt. Shasta, Lakehead or even Shingletown (assuming they don’t have to have all the immediate city-services nearby)? Moderate temperature in Northern, Ca…that’ll be a real challenge but on the upside, I’m confident they can find a 4/2 home on an acre for $500,000 or less. They may have to make some exceptions in terms of the actual location and weather but if they don’t mind the outskirts of the Bay Area, or even outside of Santa Rosa, I bet they find something there.
