Where’s YOUR Favorite Lighthouse? September 10, 2010

Lighthouses exist all over the world.  There is something quite mesmerizing about them.

This one is in Northern California and hard at work on this foggy May day in 2009.  Not far from Mendocino, (some know it as the backdrop to Murder She Wrote – you know the one with Angela Lansbury starring as a sort of sleuth), it pulled us in on this wild day to take a closer look.

It’s so wonderful to take some time to soak in the cool sea air and the fog on a day like this – and wander along the beaches picking up seashells and driftwood.  Hailing originally from Minnesota, walking along a beach never gets old.  Then again, I doubt it gets old for anyone at all.

Where’s YOUR favorite lighthouse or beach?

The Barnegat Light House at Barnegat Light New Jersey on Long Beach Island. Follow my link, it takes you to the history of the light house.

When I was a kid would race to the top of the light house with my brothers. I took my kids there when they were little and they did the same thing. This past summer, my daughter went with friends and she received a certificate for her effort to climb the light house.

I can’t wait to read about all the light houses of the world here from all the folks who post.

Hi Dan, you always have great family stories. I love it. I hope there will be lots of entries. Lighthouses are something that have always drawn me. The one I am MOST familiar with is Split Rock Lighthouse on the shores of Lake Superior in Minnesota. I loved going there as a kid. Lake Superior was as big as an ocean to me and it was a great place to think about the big world out there…

Highland Light, Truro MA. On Old Cape Cod!

One of the first that Mariners would see when coming from Europe to New England. BAck a few years, they had to pick up and move the whole Lighthouse back form the cliffs, because of erosion. Not easy to move something that big.

That’s 2 for Massachusetts now! Another good one, Linda. Thx!

My favorite beach would be Silver Beach, in Saint Joseph, Michigan. Which is the location of two lighthouses together.

I have a few photographs of these lighthouses (and other Silver Beach photographs) posted on JPGMAG.

Here’s the direct links to the photographs of the lighthouses:

There are so many good ones Mary, it’s hard to choose just one!

There are two great ones in my summer hang out of Traverse City – the Grand Traverse Lighthouse on Michigan’s pinky finger (near Northport, MI), and the Old Mission Lighthouse on the peninsula of the same name that bisects Grand Traverse Bay.

I am thoroughly enjoying this.

Fascinating! And now the Netherlands is represented. Thanks, Katherine!

Ana September 11th, 2010

My favorite lighthouse is in L’Albir, in the Valencian region of Spain, just near Altea. It’s a 2-km walk up to the lighthouse and along the way there are a few paths you can hike to get all the way down to small empty beaches.

Thanks, Ana – I think the America’s Cup was here in 2007.
A nice addition to the list. And another country represented.

David Flanagan September 11th, 2010

Hi Mary,

Scituate Light, less than two miles from my house and I jog by it almost every day. Residents love to go there during storms or otherwise.

Mary Lascelles September 11th, 2010

Scituate Light is in Massachusetts – another one for your state, David. Greg weighed in with one, too. Thank you!

Lubna September 12th, 2010

My favourite lighthouse is on Anadaman Islands (sorry no photographs). However, today I went to the Gateway of India and photographed a lighthouse just for you. Since I use film you will be able to see it only much later, after I finish the roll and have it processed. Alas there is no beach here, just the deep sea.

Jill Letendre September 12th, 2010

Hi Mary! I hope you had a good time last night! We had a blast! What a fun event! As I promised, here is my lighthouse! Enjoy the rest of the weekend!

Mary Lascelles September 12th, 2010

Thanks so much, Jill – Oregon is now officially represented here! :-D
Yes, we had a good time last night. And you looked smashing, I might add.

Mary Lascelles September 12th, 2010

Lubna, I look forward to the pic of YOUR lighthouse – all the way from India. Very cool. Thanks so much for going out to see it just cuz! :-D

Bob Stewart September 13th, 2010

I am rather partial to the St. Augustine Lighthouse in Florida. The stories are incredible, including the ghost stories.

Here’s the website for it.

Mary Lascelles September 13th, 2010

Ghost stories? :-D Thanks, Bob!

Gerry Mann September 13th, 2010

The lighthouse seems to fit just right into the landscape. It isn’t the biggest, most famous, most picturesque – it just seems to fit. You can’t see the small rocks offshore to the north in this picture that is a bird sanctuary, and to the west there is a botanical garden. Spectacular views of the waves crashing in to the inlet to the east.

This is what I think of when someone mentions lighthouses.

Regards,

Gerry.

When I was a kid, my folks used to take me to Atlantic City. On one of the entertainment piers there was a miniature golf course that had a small lighhouse over one of the holes. Impressionable youth.

One of my favorites is the lighthouse atop the H.W. Wilson building in the Bronx, http://www.lighthousedepot.com/lite_digest.asp?action=get_article&sk=1443&bhcd2=1284388002.

We often used to vacation in Maine, and were impressed by the many traditional lighthouses along the coast.

And then there is the Lighthouse for the Blind, a noble charitable organization.

Mary Lascelles September 13th, 2010

Thanks, All!

I’d love this list to grow to every area that has lighthouses? With your help, maybe we’ll make headway.

So far this is what is represented – some more than once.

States in US: NJ, MA, MI, MN, FL, CA, OR, HI, NY
Countries: New Zealand, India

Cheryl Roshak September 13th, 2010

One of my favorite lighthouses where I live in the historic Hudson River Valley is the Saugerties Lighthouse on the Hudson River at the mouth of the Esopus Creek. It was built in 1869 and stands 46′ tall. What is nice about this lighthouse is that you can walk out to it at low tide and reserve the room to spend the night out there. A magical night indeed. Here is the link to the Wikipedia page if the one I entered above doesn’t show up.

Mary Lascelles September 13th, 2010

Very cool, Cheryl, that people can stay in “your” lighthouse on the Hudson River!

Basim Mirza September 13th, 2010

A good old Lighhouse well placed near the Bay of Fundae, Nova Scotia!

Basim Mirza September 13th, 2010

Wow! Check out these lighthouses along the bay of fundy! Absolutely incredible, especially with the seasonal tides. Guiness book records them as the biggest in the world!

I had to give it some thought…. and actually, I have no clue where my favorite lighthouse is :-( – my favourite lighthouse is the one from the movie Pete’s Dragon…. so if anyone can let me know where that is, that would be great ;-)

Mary Lascelles September 14th, 2010

I would love if someone can come up with the answer to your question, Ives!
